Sports breeds superstitions, some of which are less sanitary than others.

Syracuse dropped a 37-31 loss to Boston College on Saturday. That defeat had ramifications for Fran Brown. On Monday, the first-year head coach explained that his ensuing hygiene choices hinge on a game's outcome.

"I got a ritual. Like, when we lose? I ain't even get in the shower until early this morning," Brown said, per CNY Central's Ashley Wenskoski. "I just be mad. I just brush my teeth. It's like I don't deserve soap. I don't deserve to do all that. I'm just focused on trying to get back and trying to make sure that our players mentally understand and know that I let them down and that they didn't do it."

Brown at least brushes his teeth to avoid bad breath, but that's not enough for his wife. The 42-year-old's shower ritual has consequences.

"I can't sleep in the bed if we lose because I'm not going to get in the shower for that day," Brown said. "I'm just mad. I just sit there ... I think you've got to earn the right to do certain things. So, winners get washed. I'm a loser, so I just kind of wait a little bit."

It could be worse. Brown showered before Monday's press conference, so at least he doesn't swear off personal hygiene after every loss until Syracuse wins again.

But most coaches could probably use a good wash after a long, stressful day on the sideline.

Fortunately for Brown (and his wife), he hasn't gone too many post-game evenings without a shower this season. At 6-3, Syracuse has already matched last year's win total.

Brown will look to avoid his losing routine for the second straight weekend when the Orange play at California this Saturday.
