The 2024 Masters was Verne Lundquist's final broadcast at Augusta National. The legendary commentator ultimately felt like the time was right to leave the booth.
Lundquist called 40 Masters during his legendary run with CBS. His iconic voice was always heard at the par-3 16th hole.
After wrapping up his final broadcast at Augusta National, Lundquist shared his thoughts on who should replace him. While on the "Kostis & McCord: Off Their Rockers" podcast, he suggested that Frank Nobilo should take over the No. 16 tower.
"I have a personal favorite, and I've got no dog in this hunt anymore. I mentioned it to Jim Nantz, and I'll put it out here with you guys and see what your reaction is. I would love to see Frank Nobilo at 16," Lundquist said, via Golf.com. "I just think he's a fresh face; he's a really terrific guy. I mentioned it to Jim. I haven't mentioned it to [CBS Golf lead producer] Sellers [Shy] nor to [CEO] David Berson, who took Sean [McManus'] place, but we'll see."
Luckily for Lundquist, he got his wish.
CBS Sports chairman David Berson announced on Tuesday that Nobilo will replace Lundquist's post on the 16th tower.
Nobilo, who won 14 tournaments during his career as a pro golfer, joined Golf Channel after retiring from the sport. He didn't join CBS until 2015.
Clearly, CBS has enough confidence in Nobilo that he's replacing Lundquist at the Masters. We'll see if he can handle that responsibility.
The Masters will take place from April 10-13.
