Carter Smith, one of the top quarterbacks in the class of 2025, announced his commitment to the University of Michigan last year. Smith, a four-star recruit out of Florida, chose the Wolverines after receiving offers from top programs around the country.

With only a few months left until National Signing Day, Smith made the decision to decommit from the Wolverines this week.

According to On3's Steve Wiltfong, the Wolverines may have their sights set on another quarterback, potentially influencing Smith's decision.

Wiltfong says that Michigan believes they can flip Bryce Underwood - the No. 1 player in the class - and that they're "full-speed ahead" in an effort to sway him from LSU.

That puts Smith back on the search for a new school, and his father says there are already programs who are interested in him.

"We've had multiple schools get back to us and are ready to take him," said Smith's father Dan.

"I think that's the direction. There were a couple surprises in there because they have kids right now," he added. Per On3, Clemson, Penn State and Wisconsin are all options after his choice to decommit from Michigan.

The move for Smith comes as Michigan has been in desperate need of quarterback play all season long. The program received some sad news this week as Jack Tuttle was forced to medically retire from football after sustaining the fifth concussion of his career.

Alex Orji and Davis Warren have both struggled this year, and the team has already lost three games this season. Another loss would likely end their hopes at making the College Football Playoff to defend the national championship they won last season.

With Michigan on the hunt for a true successor to JJ McCarthy, we'll see if the gamble to go after the top player in the class pays off. As for Smith, he'll have a few weeks to re-evaluate his options before making a decision ahead of National Signing Day.
