It's been several years since Brock Purdy unseated Jimmy Garoppolo for the San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback job during the 2022 season. But as Purdy continues to eye a new contract, he might be taking a shot at the man he once replaced.

Appearing on the "Built 4 More Podcast," Purdy was asked when he thought he could become the starting quarterback of the team. He admitted that his confidence grew once Garoppolo was named the starter ahead of Trey Lance.

"Once Jimmy Garoppolo became the starter (in 2022) | was like I might get some playing time this year. I just don't know when," Purdy said.

The implication of that statement could involve Garoppolo's penchant for getting injured or even struggling on the field. Fans on social media certainly think of it that way:

"When you go from QB3 to QB2, your chances of seeing the field go up dramatically. Especially since Jimmy had an injury history. It should be obvious that this isn't a shot at Jimmy although we all know he is much better than Jimmy," one user wrote.

"Tbf everyone knows Jimmy G is injury prone," wrote another.

"What Brock doesn't know is the backup is thinking the same thing about him," a third remarked.

Purdy wound up being right. Garoppolo suffered a Lisfranc foot injury in early-December of the 2022 season and Purdy took over. He went 5-0 in the regular season and led the 49ers all the way to the NFC Championship Game.

Purdy's great rookie cameo earned him the starting job the following year while Garoppolo left and ultimately signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. Purdy would lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl, while Garoppolo went 3-3 and was released one year into a three-year, $67.5 million contract.

Was Purdy intentionally taking a shot at Garoppolo here, or speaking matter-of-factly?
