Like father, like son, like grandson...
After weeks of speculation it appears Bill Belichick and his son, Steve, will reunite on North Carolina's staff, according to CBS' Matt Zenitz.
Per Zenitz: "Steve Belichick is set to join his dad's staff as North Carolina's defensive coordinator after Washington's bowl game." Adding, "As Washington's DC this season, he's improved the Huskies from 99th nationally in total defense last year to 26th this year."
One of the stipulations when Belichick took the job at UNC was that he'd eventually be able to hand the program over to his son whenever he decides to move on.
At his introductory press conference 10 days ago, the six-time Super Bowl champ addressed the possibility of hiring Steve as he puts his staff comes together.
"On the staff, we'll hire the best coaches we can hire," Belichick said. "I want to do everything I can to help this program and make it as strong as possible, so we'll hire the best ones we can get. There are several college coaches that are involved in bowl games and so forth, so I wouldn't interfere with the process at those schools, with their commitments to their teams. We'll see how it goes."
Belichick has kept pretty tight-lipped about the inner workings of his contract with the Tar Heels. But he's said all the right things regarding why he chose to come to Chapel Hill thus far.
"Chancellor Roberts and the board of trustees have made a strong commitment toward football at North Carolina and I'm here with Mike Lombardi as our general manager to do all we can to accelerate that process. And we're gonna get the team, make it as competitive as we can as soon as we can," the coach told SiriusXM last week.
It's definitely exciting to see Belichick take on a new challenge and the family ties are pretty cool.
Hopefully it ends up working out for all parties involved after a disappointing 6-6 record in 2024.
