The Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels are not realistic contenders for playoff spots. They are buried at the bottom of the American League West, and they are aware — as are all other baseball analysts and observers — that the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros are beginning to heat up. The Rangers and Astros both looked like their 2023 selves with sweep victories over the weekend against good teams. The Rangers swept the Kansas City Royals while the Astros mowed down the Baltimore Orioles. Texas and Houston might finally be shifting into high gear. It underscores the point that the A’s and Angels have low ceilings for the 2024 season. The focus must be to develop younger players and see what is attainable heading into the offseason and 2025. The A’s had a really good three-week run to start their season. The Angels had some hope earlier in the year, but then the Mike Trout injury snuffed it out. Reality has to be seen for what it is, and right now, reality does not paint a happy picture for either of these ballclubs, who have to show up for work and learn lessons which can hopefully pay off down the line more than in the short term.

Athletics-Angels Projected Starters 

Luis Medina vs. Griffin Canning

Luis Medina (1-2) has a 4.71 ERA. He hasn’t made many starts this season — four in total — so he is fresh and could be a really good pitcher in the second half of the season while a lot of other arms get tired. Medina was very effective in his most recent start against a potent Kansas City Royals batting order. You can see the stat line below. Medina has faced very talented teams thus far in his limited 2024 run. He pitched in Atlanta against the Braves and in Minnesota versus the Twins, in addition to facing the Royals last week. Facing the Angels could give him a chance to post solid numbers and give the A’s a leg up in this contest.

Last Start: Wednesday, June 19 versus the Kansas City Royals: 5 2/3 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 HR, 2 BB, 3 K

2024 Road Splits: 2 starts, 10 2/3 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 0 HR, 3 BB, 9 K

Griffin Canning (2-8) has a 5.02 ERA. There isn’t a whole lot to say about a pitcher who carries a 5-run ERA into the last week of June. Canning simply hasn’t made the grade for the Halos. If you look at his overall bulk numbers — we have his home splits posted below — one of the things which immediately stands out is a poor walk-strikeout ratio. Giving up one hit per inning is not outrageously bad, but mixing in all those walks alongside the hits, without getting a ton of strikeouts and inducing a lot of swings and misses, is where Canning really falls short. In modern baseball, pitchers need to be able to get a lot of swing and miss. In any era of baseball — modern or ancient — walks get punished. Canning fails the test of a good pitcher by walking too many hitters and not getting enough punchouts.
