Adam Schefter Reveals What Deion Told Him About The Cowboys Job

ESPN insider Adam Schefter has been all over the speculation surrounding Deion Sanders and the Dallas Cowboys. On Thursday morning, he provided an update on this potential pairing while on "Get Up."
Sanders has emerged as a candidate to become the next head coach of the Cowboys. He has been adamant about staying at Colorado, but you can never say never in the NFL. With that said, there have been some rumblings about him possibly using "America's Team" to gain leverage in contract negotiations with Colorado. According to Schefter, that couldn't be further from the truth. How does he know that? Well, he went right to the source.
"I can't help but think about 16-17 months ago I had an NFL general manager call me up and say, 'I want you to write this right now. The next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys will be Deion Sanders. Take it to the bank because of the respect that exists between Deion Sanders and Jerry Jones.' A lot of people out there now are saying that Deion Sanders is using this as a leverage ploy to get more money from Colorado," Schefter said. "I brought that up to Deion Sanders. He said, 'That ain't true, and I don't need any negotiating ploy. I'm me.' And that's how he feels. He doesn't need any negotiating ploy."
That's an epic response from Sanders, who led Colorado to a 9-4 record this season. He's right that he doesn't need to use another team for leverage. The team's improved record is all he needs to bring to the table during negotiations.
Sanders signed a five-year, $29.5 million contract with Colorado in 2022. It might be time for him to get a raise.
If Sanders is genuinely interested in the Cowboys, it'll be fascinating to see how many tweaks Jerry Jones is willing to make to his philosophies. NFL Network's Jane Slater pointed out Tuesday that he's not known for hiring a ton of assistants.
"He's got a very large staff there [at Colorado]," Slater said. "Will Jerry allow him to bring all of those [coaches to Dallas]. Mike McCarthy was asked to reduce his staff, and Jerry is not very high on paying his coaches here."
Only time will tell if Coach Prime ends up leading the Cowboys for the 2025 season.
