Adam Schefter Has Telling Update On Cowboys, Mike McCarthy Situation

The Dallas Cowboys have still not signed Mike McCarthy to a new contract with his current one about to expire on January 14.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, McCarthy and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones have had football-related discussions since the season ended but no contract discussions yet.
"Mike McCarthy's contract with the Dallas Cowboys expires on January 14th and while there have been substantial conversations between Mike McCarthy and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones regarding football issues and questions, there haven't been any substantial discussions between Mike McCarthy and Jerry Jones regarding a future contract," Schefter said. "As long as that's the case, you have to wonder now, what is Jerry Jones waiting for?"
Schefter thinks clarity should be coming this week since McCarthy's contract expires on Tuesday, which allows him to talk to other teams without the Cowboys being able to block it.
The Cowboys have already blocked the Chicago Bears from interviewing McCarthy since they requested an interview this week but the Bears could try again this coming week if McCarthy's contract expires without a new deal in place.
McCarthy came into the 2024 season with one year left on his contract. The Cowboys opted not to extend him since they wanted to see how the season went and while the team fought, the Cowboys still missed the playoffs with a 7-10 record.
Before the 2024 season, McCarthy had led the Cowboys to three consecutive 12-win seasons but never advanced past the divisional round of the playoffs. He's been the head coach for five seasons, compiling a 49-35 record.
The Cowboys have three days to discuss a new contract with McCarthy before he officially becomes a free agent and can interview for whatever job he wants.
We'll see if Jones and McCarthy start some new contract talks over the weekend.
