Meet WNBA Rookie Kate Martin's Girlfriend (1:05)

During the WNBA Expansion Draft on Friday night, the Golden State Valkyries selected Kate Martin. The former Iowa star just wrapped up her rookie season with the Las Vegas Aces.

The Aces selected Martin with the 18th pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. She averaged 2.6 points and 1.6 rebounds per game as a rookie. Though she didn't have a huge role on the team, she clearly earned her teammates' respect.

Aces superstar A'ja Wilson had a very quick response to the Valkyries selecting Martin. She posted this message on Instagram: "My baby soooo happy for you."

After sharing those kind words, Wilson joked about "dropping 50" on Martin next season.

Wilson wasn't the only veteran on the Aces who sent Martin a kind message on Instagram this weekend. Megan Gustafson also wished her well as she gets ready for a new chapter in Golden State.

"KATEEEE my rookie," Gustafson said. "Forever grateful we got to be teammates once again. Love you! Go be great!"

While Martin will miss her teammates in Las Vegas, she's excited about her opportunity in the Bay Area.

"I'm really excited," Martin said. "This league is all about opportunity, and you just need one shot, right? I'm very thankful for the Aces and everything I got to learn there, but I'm really excited for this new beginning and to build something from the ground up with the Valkyries."

There's a good chance Martin will have a much bigger role on the hardwood next season. If so, that'll allow her to fully develop her game - and compete against her former teammates in the process.
