The writing appears to be on the wall for 49ers linebacker De'Vondre Campbell, who quit on his team in San Francisco's Thursday night loss to the Rams when he refused to go in the game.
According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the 49ers plan to suspend the 31-year-old linebacker for three games, effectively ending his season.
"His actions from the game is just not something you can do to your team," head coach Kyle Shanahan said, who made it clear last week that Campbell would not play for the franchise again.
Campbell, a former first-team All-Pro, signed a one-year, $5 million contract with San Francisco back in March and reportedly decided against going in the game in both the second and third quarters when his number was called.
According to FOX NFL insider Jay Glazer, Niners GM John Lynch is the one who actually confronted Campbell on the sideline and sent him back to the locker room.
"John Lynch actually went down there in the [third] quarter and confronted him on it, saying, 'You don't want to go in the game? You're refusing?'" Glazer revealed on "The Inside Scoop." "Yes. It was Lynch who sent him in the locker room.
"By the way, I got players who called me after and said, 'Hey, we've heard you talk about this alter-ego John Lynch, this 47 Red character. Man, we saw it. That dude is crazy,'" he added. "They all saw it firsthand."
Now that Campbell's on his way out, the 49ers will likely have to add some LB depth.
Linebackers Dre Greenlaw and Dee Winters are both currently listed as questionable going into Sunday's game at Miami.
