Unfortunately for the United States, tornado season is off to a relentless start this year.
In 2024, there were 164 tornadoes reported in the United States between January and March. Believe it or not, this year's numbers are already much worse. According to preliminary reports from the Storm Prediction Center, there have already been 234 reported tornadoes this year.
A tornado outbreak swept through the Midwest and the South last weekend, killing at least 42 people and causing power outages for countless families. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Mississippi, Missouri and Louisiana were all impacted by this severe weather.
On Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service provided an update on that fatal tornado outbreak. There were 109 confirmed tornadoes from March 14-16.
AccuWeather reported this week that at leas three of the tornadoes from this outbreak were confirmed as EF4 strength.
On the Enhanced Fujita Scale, three of the tornadoes have been preliminarily rated at least EF4 strength, according to the NWS in Little Rock, Arkansas. Two of those EF4s were in Arkansas, something that had not happened on one day in the state's history since 1997. One of the two EF4s was near Diaz in Jackson County, where massive damage was left behind.
Before this outbreak, the most recent EF4 tornado to hit the U.S. was a powerful twister that hit Greenfield, Iowa, on May 21, 2024.
Tornado season usually lasts through June, so the next few months could end up being a brutal stretch for several states.
Of course, we're hoping the worst of it has already passed.
