Plenty of issues of interest on the latest pod

We’re at that time of year where there isn’t a whole load of on-field action to talk about – though the club stuff does, in fairness, continue to provide an outlet there – but that still leaves plenty of other topics of interest.
In our latest Mayo Football Podcast show, Rob and Mike cover a serious amount of ground in the company of podcast regulars Colm Boyle and Paddy Finnegan. The discussion touches on a number of issues that are worth flagging for those interested in giving the show a listen.
The approach by Connacht Rugby to play their match against Munster next April at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park is looked at, both from the perspective of the benefits that could flow from such an arrangement as well as the practical headaches that are likely to arise, given that this game is fixed for the weekend before Mayo’s Connacht Championship quarter-final clash with Sligo at the same venue.
There’s a good in-depth discussion too on training facilities (or the lack of them) for our county teams. This is in the context of the extremely generous donation by an unnamed individual of 40 acres of land in Bohola, at which the long-mooted Centre of Excellence may now be built. Provided the necessary funds are raised for this work, of course …
The raft of club management vacancies at the present time also gets an airing, as does the recent club action. One eye-opening fact from last weekend was that Sam Callinan suffered no fewer than four broken ribs in the clash that ended his participation in the Connacht semi-final against Coolera-Strandhill. He’s one of a few players that Kevin McStay and his management team may be forced to do without early next year.
Talking of player availability for 2025, the biggest topic the lads touched on in the pod – which is still a developing story – is the one revealed on the show by Mike. This was where he said it’s now widely accepted that Cillian O’Connor will not be available to play for Mayo in 2025. Colm Boyle, a teammate of Cillian’s for many years, lays out in stark terms what the impact of the Ballintubber man’s absence could mean for us next year.
