Recap: Powerless Bruins fall 2-0 to Flyers

Offensive woes continue in loss.

The Boston Bruins were blanked 2-0 by the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night at the TD Garden as the team's offensive woes continue.

"The offense isn't materializing for us," Jim Montgomery said.

After a decent start, the Bruins had a hard time sustaining offensive zone time. Struggles continued to pile up for the Bruins who went 0 for 4 on the power play — with two man-advantages with zero shots. On 5v5, they passed up shots or weren't shooting at all. Down a goal in the third, the Bruins lacked desperation with only three shots that made it on net.

"We're not making plays, we're not doing enough to generate high-danger scoring chances." Montgomery said postgame.

With the loss, the Bruins are 1-3-1 in their last five games.

Here are the highlights:

First period:

Scoreless

Shots were 11-7 Bruins.

Second period:

Tyson Forester sent a wrist shot through Joonas Korpisalo's five-hole at 5:32 of the second period...1-0 Flyers.

Third period:

Joel Farabee intercepted a pass attempt by Charlie McAvoy to backhand a long shot on the empty net after he crossed in the offensive zone at 19:36 of the third period. Final score: 2-0 Flyers.

Game notes:

• It feels like a broken record, but if there's no offense, there's no scoring and you're not going to win the game. The Bruins couldn't sustained enough offensive-zone time to really generate any high-danger chances. Yes, they got shots off on Ersson, but there weren't enough that felt like quality scoring opportunities.
• While they stayed mostly out of the box tonight (only two penalties), the Bruins had no power on the power play. They couldn't capitalize on a 5-on-3. That man advantage almost ended poorly with Scoot Laughton coming out of the box and ending up on a 2-on-1. Thankfully Korpisalo made a great save on the attempt. Then in the second, the Bruins took too long to set up and only got one shot on net as time expired.
• Montgomery said they need quicker movement and a shot-first mentality on the power play moving forward. On 5v5, he said they are not generating enough offense and need to take advantage of when bodies are out front and shoot the puck then.
• The Bruins only had three shots on net in the third period. The team is at times lacking desperation when it's needed most. It comes back to the power play too in the final frame and not being able to get the equalizer because the power-play units are holding on to the puck too long and trying to make cute plays instead of shooting.
• Overall, Korpisalo looked pretty good in his third start of the season. Although he didn't face a ton of shots, he "gave us an opportunity to win," Montgomery said. Korpisalo came up big on the 2-on-1 with Philly coming in on him with their expired penalty. He made some important saves before the Flyers go their go-ahead goal.
• Is there too much line changing? As the Bruins are trying to generate offense, and figuring out the best way to do that, how can the lines build chemistry if they aren't the same for a whole game or a few games together?
• The Bruins will hit the road on Thursday, Oct. 31, to face the Carolina Hurricanes at 7 p.m.
